Finding A Therapist

finding a therapist

Find the right therapist can be exciting and terrifying! Working with the right fit is such a huge step toward achieving your goals. We firmly believe that the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important foundational pieces to feeling that therapy is worth your while. But how does one go about identifying the best fit therapist for them?

#1 Vibe Check

Do you prefer someone with calm or upbeat energy? Someone who creates a dialogue and prompts with questions or uses silence?

#2 Counseling Approaches

What kind of approach do they use in the therapeutic relationship? Do they focus on skills, processing, or a mixture of both?

#3 Identify Your Goals

What do you really want to accomplish with your time? Do you want to reduce symptoms, increase, coping, build self-awareness, or something else?

#4 Challenge vs. Validation Balance

What kind of support do you respond best to? Do you need someone who challenges you or is there to hold space and validate your experiences and discoveries? How much collaboration do you want with your therapist and who do you want in the driver’s seat?

#5 Phone a Friend

When in doubt, if you’re looking at a few options and totally stuck - turn to your supports who you know you almost as well as you know yourself and see what they think about a few options you’re choosing between.

Not to mention Ambler Counseling Center’s consultation process helps prospective clients identify what they’re looking for and who on the team might be the best fit. Can’t wait to hear from you!
